Types of Butterflies in Virginia

About 102 butterfly species flutter in this south-eastern US state. Among them, a wide variety of species inhabit in Applachian Mountains and coastal areas only. Warm sunny days between mid-April and mid-October are especially good times to hunt for butterflies. The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) is the official state butterfly of Virginia since 1991.
